The music of Baha Men is a mixture of the junkanoo rhythms found in the festival music of The Bahamas blended with pop, rhythm & blues, and rap music. Their biggest hit to date "Who Let The Dogs Out" although written by a West Indian Anslem Douglas deviated from the original soca rhythms from Trinidad in which it was originally recorded. This song, because of its rhythm is viewed as 'not Bahamian" by many Bahamians.

Although criticism arose over this composition, it however took Baha Men to the top of the charts in the year 2002. In addition, Baha Men takes full advantage of the use of other familiar pre-recorded hit songs such as "Kokomo", "Dancing In The Moonlight" among other songs from popular disco craze bands like KC & The Sunshine Band. Baha Men has worked their way to the fore of the Bahamian music scene not only with the integration of the junkanoo sound, but in their craftiness in diversification of their total musical presentation.

You can find amidst their styles, hip-hop, R & B, pop, disco, and funk. The experience of the senior members within the group bring with them the sound of yesterday fused with the new generation of sounds and styles of today. The song that stands out as classic Bahamian is "Back To The Island". This song that was originally recorded by Ronnie Butler revived the Bahamian sound and did much in re-instating the use of junkanoo in the music of The Bahamas.

With the production of a colorful video, Baha Men also raised the bar in the presentation of their performance experience. For these few reasons , I chose "Back To The Island as a feature song for this analysis.

Because of the rhythmic complexities found in the music of the Caribbean, I'm inclined to use cut time meter when notating this music. This meter deals very effectively in the ease of reading the music. Common time can be used, but will however prove more challenging with the use of sixteenth rhythms throughout the music.

The example below therefore must be counted in two in order to follow the form of the piece. Furthermore, keeping in mind that this song represents early Bahamian calypso, the chord progression used is simple I, IV, V accompanied with themes and motifs that re-occur featuring the acoustic guitar in the interlude section in between each verse.

The use of the goatskin drums and cowbells brings alive the flavor of Bay Street junkanoo festivities which commonly takes place during the Christmas holiday season. Another point worthy of mention is the use of the wax paper on a hair comb in the introduction and breaks of the song. This tradition is rarely seen today although it was quite common in the early days of Bahamian music.

The fusion of the popular hip-hop beat of the late 90' is quite prevalent as a backdrop for the junkanoo which drives the rhythmic pulse of this particular piece of music.
